The Azimuth of the Sun at Rise and Set

Graphics and table

input

Enter the latitude in decimal degrees,
northern positive, southern negative,

enter the longitude in decimal degrees,
eastern positive, western negative,

then press the button "Apply input".

You may use the keys "d", or "m" to increase the date or month,
or
Shift key and "d", "m" to decrease the date, or month.

Azimuth of the Sun

The azimuth is the angular distance measured along the horizon (compass angle, bearing).

The angle is measured clockwise (eastwards) from the North point:
N = 0°, E= 90°, S = 180°, W = 270°.

The azimuth angle at rise and set (Azo) depends on the current declination (delta) of the Sun and on the latitude (beta) of the observer:

cos (Azo) = sin delta / cos beta

At a mid northern latitude (beta=45° N):

for sommer solstice (delta = +23.5°) the azimuth angle of the rising Sun is

Azo = 56°

and for winter solstice (delta = -23.5°):

Azo = 124°

Use the Write... menu to get a table, which can be printed (by copy and paste).
